Outdoor Project of the Year
Working alongside architects of this calibre from the onset of this project had been an absolute pleasure and one that was extremely successful.
Archier architects in collaboration with all four directors of the business came up with this masterpiece which we at Merlin were very excited to be part of. Planning and landscape consideration of the impact that this project would have on the natural environment was carefully considered and allowed for a beautiful outcome with lavish greenery that now hangs from the garden bed and through the steel balustrade.
Indoor-outdoor living spaces were created from all aspects of this design, allowing protection from the prevailing winds in the middle of winter whilst yielding great sunlight gains. The use of timber windows and doors along with the double glazing components give exceptional thermal properties and allow the hydronic heating to regulate the temperature even through harsh Tasmanian weather. Floor to ceiling glass throughout gives the three metre ceilings a ‘grand’ feeling upon entry.
One of the highlights of this project was the natural existing rock outcrop that found itself strategically placed within the courtyard. Rather than blasting it for a flat garden bed, the rock became a feature - so much of a feature that the project was named for it (‘The Rock’). Now bathed in artificial light and surrounded by a fernery the rock looks like it was always part of this build.
