West Hobart: Old Meets New
Finalist, 2018 HIA Awards
Renovation/Addition $200,000-$400,000
Merlin Constructions was engaged in October 2017 as the builder for this exciting project in West Hobart. The architect, who in this build was also the client, had decided on Merlin Constructions from the onset. It was our reputation for ‘unsurpassed quality and meticulous detail’ that this architect sought. We knew together we could deliver an award-worthy outcome.
The Patrick Street project began with a negotiated focus between the client and Merlin team. The client was in need of more room to accommodate their expanding family, therefore the size of the planned addition was fixed. With some minor design changes, an outcome to suit the budget was agreed upon and building works commenced.
The new addition was a triumph in blending the old with the new in a transition that could be described as seamless. The use of externally exposed PFC steel construction abutting glass angled double glazed units with seamless aluminium frames are the showcase of this build. The project boasts beautiful Tasmanian Oak timber cladding with finely crafted screens and junctions. Polished concrete flooring coupled with the warmth and power of blackwood kitchen joinery proved an exceptional piece of craftsmanship. What’s more, the project engages passive solar design principles and provides excellent thermal efficiency.
